The Judas Tree
The Judas tree is known for its unusual flowering pattern. What sets it apart is that it is cauliflorous: its flowers appear directly on its trunk and branches. It is very adaptable to its growing conditions. It will thrive in average-quality soil and does not require much water once it is well established. It is a species worth investing in during this era of climate change. It will grow rapidly at first before slowing down after a few years.
According to legend, Judas hanged himself from a Cercis siliquastrum (a tree very common in Israel). This is said to have given rise to the vernacular name (a common name for an animal or plant, as opposed to its scientific name) “tree of Judea,” a corruption of “tree of Judas.”
It is primarily used as an ornamental tree, whether in small or large gardens, as well as in urban areas, because it is highly tolerant of pollution.
Its flowers and young fruits, when they are still tender, can be eaten raw or in salads. They have a slightly tart flavor. They are used primarily in Greece and Turkey.
