A majestic and sturdy tree

The pedunculate oak is a majestic tree; it is the king of our European forests. It can reach impressive ages and is perfectly adapted to our climates. It is an iconic tree that features in many legends. It was revered by the Celts. For them, the oak symbolized hospitality and was considered the equivalent of a temple. They believed these trees were inhabited by nymphs. When a tree was cut down, religious rituals were performed to allow the nymphs to retreat and to avoid their vengeance.

The oak is a sacred tree in many traditions, throughout history and across the globe. It is synonymous with strength and sturdiness. That is the impression it gives when it reaches maturity. It is therefore no surprise that the terms “oaks” and “strength” are both translated into Latin by the same word: robur, symbolizing both moral and physical strength. It is probably one of the trees that has inspired the most beliefs among the Greeks, the Celts, as well as the Vikings and many other cultures.

I’m all around you every day. I’m the wood that burns in your fireplace—even if I’m not the highest quality. My finest parts will be used to build the framework of your house; I was even used in the construction of Notre-Dame de Paris.
