Quercus rubra, also known as the American red oak, is a large forest tree. It has an exceptionally long lifespan and is incredibly hardy.
It was introduced to Europe in the 1700s to restock forests, as its rapid growth made it more attractive than European oaks at the time. Today, it is found as far north as southern Scandinavia.
Its use in forests is increasingly discouraged in Europe because it produces large quantities of acorns as early as age 20. As a result, it can become invasive and displace native oak species.
Its bark has long been used for tanning leather. Its wood is easy to work with because it has few knots and a straighter grain than common oaks. Its high-quality wood is used for framing, cooperage, as well as in carpentry and cabinetmaking.
It is not recommended to plant a red oak near homes because its roots are very powerful and can lift even fairly thick pavement.
The red oak is often associated with unconditional love. This is likely due to its vibrant color and its leaves, which turn a fiery red in the fall.
