England's Hurdling Star
The field maple is a very common tree in French forests. Despite its name, it is found more often in forests than in fields. It was traditionally used in England to form hedgerows (hedges made of native plants used to separate plots of land).
It grows slowly and can live for more than 100 years. It truly comes into its own in the fall, when its foliage takes on shades of gold, copper, and bronze.
It is very easy to grow, thrives in all types of soil, and tolerates drought well. It is a good choice in this era of global warming.
Its young leaves are edible and can be enjoyed in salads. Its fruits can be pickled in brine, much like gherkins. It is one of the most nectar-rich tree species in our region. It produces high-quality wood that can be used in cabinetmaking or as lumber.
Like its Canadian cousin, it produces a sweet sap that can be used to make homemade syrup. Maple syrup is healthier than the white sugar we usually use.
