The Medicine Tree

One of the tallest trees in the world

There are more than 500 species of Eucalyptus, some of which—such as Eucalyptus niphophila and globulus—tolerate cold well. Eucalyptus gunnii is the most common in our gardens because it can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. Depending on the species, it can grow as a shrub or a very tall tree. The bark on the trunks is one of the most useful ways to tell them apart. Their appearance can vary greatly.

Eucalyptus regnans is one of the tallest trees on the planet, along with the sequoia. In 1872, an Eucalyptus tree was measured and estimated to be 132 meters tall, making it the tallest tree in the world at the time. This colossus was felled during logging operations. The tallest surviving specimens measure around 100 meters. They are known for their rapid growth and are widely used in construction, the paper industry, and carpentry. It is a hard wood that is difficult to bend.

It is nicknamed the “fever tree” because it is very effective against infections of the nose, ears, and throat, and for relieving fever.
