Boundou Community Nature Reserve Conservation Society

CORENA (Conservatoire de la Réserve Naturelle Communautaire du Boundou) is a Senegalese association responsible for managing the Boundou Community Nature Reserve, located in south-eastern Senegal.

Established in 2009, CORENA’s main mission is to implement the reserve’s management plan, which combines both environmental protection and the development of local communities.

This reserve, created by local communities, is based on a unique principle: protecting biodiversity whilst improving the living conditions of local residents.

CORENA works closely with local communities (farmers, herders, villages) to manage natural resources sustainably and limit human impacts on the environment.

What was the money used for?

Contribution towards the installation of two feeding stations and awareness-raising activities in 18 schools on the reserve.

Target species: Egyptian vulture – Scavenger vulture – African vulture – Rüppell’s vulture – Oricou vulture – Golden vulture

The first feeding site was successfully set up, and the first village-wide community mobilisation day attracted 54 participants (livestock farmers, shepherds, butchers, women from the economic interest groups, eco-guards, as well as several villagers). The day was organised into two parts: the first focused on raising awareness of vulture ecology and the link between vultures, sanitation and human health.

The second part focused on explaining how the feeding site works and how it is managed by the community. The meeting concluded with the signing of a community charter of good practice for the use of the feeding site. The participants were very enthusiastic and clearly understood the issues surrounding the role of vultures in village sanitation and community health.
