A sanctuary dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned bonobos
Founded in 1993, the association Lola ya Bonobo works in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to save bonobos victims of poaching.
These primates are often hunted for their meat, and their babies, orphaned, are then sold as pets. At the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary, caregivers and a dedicated veterinarian provide special attention to each rescued bonobo, offering them the love and care essential for their rehabilitation.
The name of the sanctuary, Lola ya Bonobo, means "Bonobo Paradise" in Lingala, perfectly summarizing the association’s mission: to offer a second chance to these abused animals.
In April 2025, torrential rains devastated the Kinshasa region, causing massive flooding at Lola ya Bonobo.
These unprecedented damages affected the sanctuary’s infrastructure, particularly flooding critical areas, including the Lukaya River. The funds raised will be used to repair damaged equipment, clean and restore the site, as well as replace the essential filtration system to maintain a healthy environment for the bonobos.
Each donation helps restore the sanctuary and ensure a future for these orphaned bonobos.
